2021 Community Arts Award Supports Local Mural Artist Tim Hon
The Martinez Arts Association (MAA) has selected Tim Hon as the recipient of the second annual MAA Community Arts Award. Tim will receive $500 to support his ongoing efforts to create beautiful public murals around the Martinez community and beyond. For the second time in 52 years, MAA had to cancel this year’s Art in the Park festival due to Covid-19 restrictions. Art in the Park is a much-loved event that typically supports over 60 local artists and several local bands. In 2020, to help compensate for the loss of opportunity and potential income, the MAA Board of Directors decided to create a Community Arts Award to recognize and support an innovative community arts organization or individual. . Tim is part of an art group known as “Illuminaries”, which is known for the 90-foot elephant mural in downtown Oakland, as well as over 100 other public art projects around the state. His mission is to inspire youth and uplift public spaces through wild street art. He grew up around graffiti culture in Berkeley and reluctantly moved to Martinez about six years ago. To his surprise, he grew to love the small town with so much character. He says, “ I had expected it to be just another sterile suburb, but art and culture was everywhere. There is so much history and personality to Martinez.” He couldn't wait to begin adding to the public art scene and is grateful that Martinez has embraced the additions he has been able to make. His latest mural can be seen at Hidden Valley elementary school. It is said that art is a reflection of the community from which it is made, Tim Hon has delighted our community with innovative murals on local walls. It is an honor for MAA to award Tim Hon for his generous donation of time and talent. The MAA is fortunate to be able to fund this new award through past events, grants and membership dues. Founded in 1968 as a nonprofit organization, the MAA organizes and participates in many community events throughout the year. MAA’s goal is to encourage art culture and education for the local community. Fundraising proceeds provide scholarships to graduating seniors as well as art grants for elementary through high school teachers. |
